Autism Reading: Books for Parents and Educators

Here are some books on autism for parents and educators with ideas that could be applicable at home or school.

Educating and raising children with autism can be challenging. Books are great resources for parents and educators looking to better understand the behavior and perspectives of their students. As a teacher myself, I wrote this article to highlight some of the best books I’ve found about autism.

Autism Reading: Books for Parents and Educators

1. Behavior Solutions for the Inclusive Classroom

Behavior Solutions for the Inclusive Classroom by Beth Aune, Beth Burt, and Peter Gennaro discusses some of the common behaviors parents and educators working with autistic children will encounter. The authors highlight different situations such as difficulty in engaging with other students and breaking play items. They give step-by-step solutions to educating children with autism and how educators can deal with different situations they may encounter while imparting knowledge to autism spectrum children. 

The book also contains solutions to most behaviors parents and educators will face where they can peruse through the table of contents and identify a behavior and read the book to find the root cause of a behavior.

2. Look Me in the Eye: My Life with Asperger’s 

Look Me in the Eye: My Life with Asperger’s by John Elder Robison shares the author’s experiences growing up as a child with autism. His narrations are a source of information to parents and educators to understand different behaviors that children with autism experience so that they do not face difficult periods while trying to understand their children. 

Additionally, Robison offers valuable information on his experiences navigating adulthood as a person with autism. The information is very valuable especially to parents who want to teach their children more socially acceptable behavior as they grow into adulthood.

3. Special People Special Ways 

Special People Special Ways helps parents and educators assist children to understand their unique condition compared with others. It consists of different pictures highlighting different disabilities which help children understand why their fellow students may behave differently or may need a different kind of assistance. 

The book by Arlene Maguire and Sheila Bailey helps create a positive learning environment where people with autism are understood, appreciated, and accepted. The authors believe that creating a positive learning environment can have a lasting impact on children with autism.

4. The Social Skills Picture Book 

The Social Skills Picture Book can benefit parents and educators because it contains pictures that are very common and useful in reaching young learners with autism. The author, Jed Baker, believes that when pictures are used to teach children with autism a better and lasting impact is attained rather than using words.

According to Baker, using words on children with autism can mean they struggle to learn concepts hence making the learning process challenging. The book impacts learners with skills such as recognizing different moods by people and assessing the responses by listeners when one is speaking.

5. The Out-of-Sync Child

The Out-Of-Sync Child by Carol Stock Kranowitz is an explanation to parents and educators on how to work and live with children on the spectrum. Throughout the book, the author explains the different behaviors parents and educators will encounter and how they can solve any issue that arises from the behaviors exhibited by the children. Additionally, the book gives a detailed encounter of the sources of different behaviors and what parents and educators can do to safely solve different situations that illicit unwarranted behavior.

6. Apps for autism 

Apps for Autism by Jean Brady is an explanation to parents and educators on all the technological apps that are useful to children and young adults with autism. The author highlights the importance of technology in current times and insists that children and young adults with autism need not be left behind on issues related to technology. Therefore, throughout the book, the author identifies some of the most important applications that parents and educators can introduce to children with autism. All the applications identified in the book are easily accessible from any available device to the parent or educator which makes the child’s learning process easy.

7. Building Sensory Friendly Classrooms to Support Children with Challenging Behaviors

Building Sensory Friendly Classrooms to Support Children with Challenging Behaviors: Implementing Data Driven Strategies! by Rebecca Moyes explains the value of having a proper and productive learning environment for children with autism. Throughout the book, she explains how a classroom should be set up so that it provides a comfortable learning environment for children with sensory difficulties. She adds that data collected from observations made by students should be used adequately to develop the setup a classroom should take so that students with different special needs can be catered for.

In conclusion, having appropriate books for parents and educators to teach children with autism is essential. Parents and educators get valuable information from these books which help them deal with different situations they encounter with children on the spectrum. Finally, parents and educators learn how to create a suitable environment that suits the children’s needs.
